Preparation 2 immerses you in a virtual environment of augmented strings crafted using advanced physical modeling techniques. This instrument features two virtual strings that interact through collisions with a rattle and a dynamic fret, producing a rich range of acoustic tones. Users can customize the properties of the acoustic model to create sounds ranging from unique stringed instruments to experimental soundscapes, offering a broad sonic palette for creative expression.
Each time a note is played, Preparation 2 generates a new model consisting of a pair of virtual strings, which can be adjusted to behave as long bars. The strings can collide with both a fret and a rattle, with the rattle creating chaotic chain reactions as strings pass through its frame. The fret's position and characteristics influence string collisions and can mute harmonics or serve purely as a colliding element. These parameters, along with the positions of the fret and rattle, can be modulated using LFOs, velocity sensitivity, and keyboard tracking for dynamic and evolving sounds.
Sound excitation options include plucking, bowing, or using sidechain audio input from the host DAW to vibrate the strings, adding expressive performance capabilities. The pluck and bow modules allow control over force and microphone positions along the strings, influencing tonal character and allowing for nuanced articulation. Additionally, sidechain input can be gated by MIDI notes to directly excite the strings with external audio, creating resonant systems that respond uniquely to any sound source fed into the model.
