Friction is a physical modeling synthesizer crafted to emulate a variety of friction-based sounds, making it ideal for both budget foley production and experimental music projects. Its design captures the subtle nuances of surfaces interacting, allowing users to create realistic and expressive audio textures that range from everyday mechanical noises to unique sonic explorations.
The synthesizer’s core engine applies a friction algorithm to a mass-spring system, simulating the dynamic response of surfaces in contact. By employing two waveguides to model the main resonances of physical objects and utilizing 4x oversampling, it delivers authentic and detailed sounds such as squealing tires, squeaky hinges, and wiping noises. This approach results in rich, lifelike audio that accurately reflects the physical characteristics of friction-generated sounds.
Friction offers extensive modulation capabilities with three 32-stage envelopes, four configurable LFOs, and an intuitive x-y pad, providing flexible control over the sound shaping process. Its modulation routing system allows multiple modulators and controllers to be assigned to various parameters simultaneously, enhancing creative possibilities. These features make Friction a powerful tool for sound designers seeking to craft dynamic and evolving friction-based soundscapes.
