World in Gourd captures the unique sound of the Hulusi, a traditional Chinese wind instrument favored by the Dai, Yi, and Miao ethnic groups. Featuring a bamboo wind tube and gourd resonance chamber, the Hulusi produces a sweet and expressive tone often used for romantic melodies and lyrical dance accompaniment. This virtual instrument includes 1829 meticulously recorded samples at 44100 Hz and 24-bit quality, totaling 1.1GB. Multiple microphone positions were used during recording to capture spatial depth and natural reverb, offering users adjustable sound field controls to shape the tone and ambiance to their preference.
World in Gourd offers an extensive range of performance articulations such as mordent, trill, vibrato, staccato, glissando, and finger pole popping, all triggered via MIDI for authentic expression. The instrument features a self-developed vibrato engine and real-recorded gliss samples that can be played at varying speeds to emulate true Hulusi nuances. Legato transitions are enhanced with innovative spectrum fusion technology, which blends notes smoothly by addressing common phase-cancellation issues. Users can also select different Hulusi tunings, including bass, alto, and treble, along with harmony tube samples that enrich the sound with natural harmonics.
Additional features include convolution reverb samples from iconic Chinese heritage sites, allowing the instrument to sound as if performed in legendary locations like the Great Wall or the Terracotta Army site. The integrated effect rack provides essential tools such as compressor, EQ, chorus, and ping-pong delay for further sound customization. A comprehensive pattern library is available to inspire creativity, with ready-to-use presets and the ability to create custom patterns by dragging MIDI clips. World in Gourd combines traditional Chinese musical heritage with advanced sampling and performance technology to deliver an immersive Hulusi experience.
