Stator is a tape wobble simulator designed to recreate the natural speed fluctuations found in vintage tape machines. It captures the intricate variations of wow and flutter caused by uneven motor rotation and tape feed, along with scrape flutter from tape friction against the tape head. This complex modulation results in rich pitch drift and lo-fi jitter effects, evoking the nostalgic sound of aged audio and video cassette players.
The plugin enhances stereo imaging by applying unique widening techniques to each of its three modulation components. Adjustable channel crosstalk introduces subtle chorusing and phasing effects, contributing to a warm and authentic vintage character. An internal feedback loop further enriches the sound with additional coloration, allowing users to shape the tonal texture and depth to their preference.
Stator supports a variety of channel configurations, including mono to mono, mono to stereo, and stereo to stereo, ensuring flexibility in different production setups. Its user-friendly graphic interface features color-coded elements and consistent parameter mapping for intuitive control and automation. Compatible with AAX, AU, and VST3 formats on modern macOS and Windows systems, it integrates seamlessly into contemporary digital audio workstations.
