SpectroBits is a unique synthesizer that creates sound based on spectrogram images. It translates the horizontal axis of an image into time and the vertical axis into frequency, using MIDI notes to set the base pitch. This approach allows the instrument to generate sound by interpreting pixel brightness, where darker pixels produce silence and brighter pixels create strong harmonics at their respective frequencies.
The synthesizer features a visual reference with lines indicating key frequencies, such as the red line representing 440 Hz when playing the note A4, helping users understand how the image translates into sound. Additionally, pixel colors influence stereo panning, with red pixels panned left and green pixels panned right, while blue pixels have no effect on the stereo field. This color-based panning adds an extra layer of spatial control to the sound design process.
Users can edit images directly within the built-in bitmap editor or import images in common formats like BMP, PNG, JPG, and GIF. All imported images are automatically resized to a fixed 512x512 resolution to ensure compatibility. This combination of image manipulation and sound synthesis offers a creative and visual approach to music production, enabling innovative sound creation by transforming pictures into evolving audio textures.
