The Sonoris Mastering Equalizer (SMEQ) is a high-quality parametric equalizer designed for both mixing and mastering tasks. It offers seven bands, including lowpass, highpass, peaking, and shelving filters, allowing precise tonal shaping. Each band can operate in either linear phase or minimum phase mode, providing flexibility to suit different audio processing needs. This makes the SMEQ especially effective for handling complex mixes, vocal and instrumental tracks, and orchestral recordings with clarity and precision.
SMEQ's linear phase implementation ensures transparent sound adjustments without introducing unwanted coloration or smearing transients. It preserves the imaging and depth of the original audio, allowing users to boost or cut frequencies more aggressively than with conventional equalizers without negative side effects. This is achieved through an advanced backward-forward filtering technique using IIR filters, which offers an analog-like character and greater efficiency compared to standard FIR filter designs typically found in linear phase equalizers.
The equalizer also includes an automatic and manual upsampling feature with options for 2x, 4x, or 8x, enhancing accuracy especially at higher frequencies. Its user interface provides detailed visual feedback with draggable controls, zoom levels, and a high-resolution level meter for precise adjustments. Additional conveniences such as soft engage technology to avoid switching noise, full automation support, stereo and mid-side processing, and scalable UI make SMEQ a powerful tool for professional audio production.
