The PROMARS synthesizer, introduced in 1979 as a compact counterpart to the iconic JUPITER-4, delivers a rich and thick analog sound that has become increasingly prized by musicians and collectors. Known for its distinctive voice, this synthesizer faithfully reproduces the warm, analog character typical of Roland instruments from the late 1970s. Its sound is defined by powerful basses and striking lead tones that retain the vintage charm while standing out in modern productions.
Unlike its sibling, which featured a single oscillator and sub-oscillator per voice, the PROMARS boasts two oscillators and two sub-oscillators, allowing for a unique unison chorus effect that enhances its sonic depth. This design choice results in a lush, massive sound often compared to a four-oscillator synthesizer. Its monophonic nature, combined with the ability to create fat, buzzy leads and growling bass sounds, ensures that it remains a favorite for crafting bold and expressive analog tones.
The software adaptation of the PROMARS authentically captures the original hardware’s sonic qualities through precise circuit-level modeling. Beyond its faithful recreation, the plug-in offers additional features such as extended oscillator range, a new random waveform for the LFO, customizable noise and pulse width controls, and an advanced arpeggiator with tempo synchronization. Modern effects including reverb, bit-crusher, and tempo-sync delay expand creative possibilities, making this plug-in an exceptional tool for both vintage-inspired and contemporary sound design.
