It functions as both an effect and a virtual instrument, and also offers a standalone application mode. This flexibility enables musicians and producers to insert multiple plug-ins on a single track or use PatchWork independently with up to eight audio channels. Its intuitive interface provides input and output level meters for precise signal monitoring throughout the processing chain.

The plug-in allows users to create complex effects or instrument chains by organizing plug-ins in series or up to eight parallel chains that can be activated separately. Routing plug-ins is simplified by a matrix-based system, eliminating complicated cabling and making it easy to add or remove plug-ins in the rack. Each plug-in slot benefits from features like latency compensation, individual bypass, preset management, and undo/redo functionality. Additionally, PatchWork stores window positions for each plug-in to restore layouts instantly with saved sessions or presets.

PatchWork supports advanced control options, including parameter mapping for automation or external control surface integration, as well as flexible MIDI and audio routing. This includes connecting sub plug-ins with each other or to the host, supporting side chain inputs and multiple outputs. Users can link pre and post gains to maintain consistent levels, and easily cut, copy, or paste plug-ins with their settings between slots. Complex setups and plug-in layouts can be saved, recalled instantly, and shared across different DAWs, enhancing workflow efficiency for creative audio production.
