The OB-E is a software instrument inspired by the legendary Oberheim 8-Voice synthesizer, offering a powerful and expansive sonic experience that goes beyond simple emulation. It faithfully recreates the classic Synthesizer Expander Module (SEM) architecture, which combines eight individual SEMs, each with dual oscillators and a multi-mode filter, to deliver rich eight-note polyphony. This unique design provides a lush and authentic analog sound that has been meticulously preserved while introducing modern enhancements for deeper musical expression.
Designed with creative flexibility in mind, the OB-E includes a wide range of performance controls such as velocity sensitivity, polyphonic aftertouch, and MPE compatibility. Additional features like a third oscillator functioning as an audio-rate LFO, multiple keyboard modes, and a comprehensive 8-step sequencer expand its sound design possibilities further. The instrument also incorporates new effects including a stereo delay and a rich reverb, alongside a Drum Mode that transforms the SEMs into an analog-style drum machine, complete with dedicated drum kits, broadening its use in various musical contexts.
A collaboration with Tom Oberheim and original Oberheim engineer Marcus Ryle helped refine the OB-E, resulting in the addition of a Vintage control that introduces subtle pitch variations to emulate the original hardware’s character more closely. The latest version supports both macOS and Windows, featuring over 700 carefully crafted presets that are easily navigable through a librarian interface. This combination of authentic sound, extensive preset library, and modern workflow options makes the OB-E an indispensable instrument for producers and sound designers seeking the distinctive Oberheim sonic legacy in a contemporary software format.
