Nils' K1v is a precise software recreation of the iconic 1988 Kawai K1 synthesizer, delivering the distinctive character of this classic Japanese digital rompler. It features a comprehensive collection of 968 single presets and 384 multi presets, including the entire original factory set along with all ROM cards and the Kawai PHm Pop Synth Module singles. The plugin offers an organized preset browser with search functionality, full editing capabilities for both single and multi presets, and supports importing and exporting SysEx data, enabling seamless integration with the original hardware.
The K1v's sound engine faithfully replicates the original 8-bit synthesis process, providing access to 256 waveforms and 204 additive waveforms with up to 128 harmonics, alongside 52 PCM waveforms. It includes a DADSR envelope, multiple velocity curves, modulation options such as ring modulation, an LFO with various wave shapes, and real-time control via a joystick interface. The plugin supports complete MIDI implementation, including program changes, bank select, and SysEx messages, allowing for dynamic preset updates and hardware control. With full automation and a resizable user interface, it fits comfortably into modern digital audio workstations on Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms.
Regular updates have enhanced stability, MIDI compatibility, and user experience, addressing issues like MIDI event handling, UI responsiveness, and preset management. The K1v also improves on the original's workflow by enabling preset navigation via keyboard, adding context menus for preset copying and MIDI transmission, and refining velocity and key scaling accuracy. Its robust MIDI features allow it to function both as a standalone plugin and as a detailed editor for Kawai K1 hardware, making it an essential tool for enthusiasts seeking the vintage digital sounds of the late '80s with modern convenience and precision.
