The URS M series MotorCity Equalizer offers an authentic digital recreation of the iconic 7-band passive equalizers crafted exclusively for Motown engineers during the Motown era. These equalizers were integral to the sound of Motown’s groundbreaking recordings, featuring a unique design that predated many contemporary studio technologies. Developed initially in 1965 alongside Motown’s custom eight-track tape recorder, these EQs allowed Motown artists to record with advanced precision well before other popular bands embraced similar technology.
In 1968, Motown expanded its sonic capabilities with the creation of 32 additional EQ units to support its new 16-track recording rooms. These equalizers introduced the groundbreaking Proportional Q feature, enabling a dynamic adjustment where subtle boosts or cuts affect a wider frequency range, while more extreme adjustments focus on narrower bands. This innovative approach to equalization contributed significantly to the distinctive Motown sound that has influenced generations of music producers and engineers.
The MotorCity Equalizer offers seven peak bands spanning from 50Hz to 12.5kHz, each adjustable in precise 1dB increments up to ±8dB. Essential controls such as input and output level adjustments, an in/out bypass switch, and a phase reverse switch provide flexibility for a wide range of mixing scenarios. This plugin captures the vintage character and sonic warmth of the original hardware, making it a valuable tool for producers seeking to infuse their mixes with classic Motown tonality.
