The GSi Model D6 is a physical modeling emulation of the iconic Hohner Clavinet D6, an instrument that revolutionized keyboard sounds in rock and pop music during the seventies. Originally conceived as a portable harpsichord, the Clavinet D6 became famous for its distinctive funk tone, heard prominently in classics like "Superstition." Its unique sound, created by 60 strings and two humbucker pickups similar to those in electric guitars, allows it to produce both rhythmic and melodic textures. This capability made it a staple in many musical genres and a recognizable element in various film and television soundtracks from the 70s and early 80s.
Powered by the same advanced physical modeling engine used in other acclaimed instruments like the GSi Gemini and Crumar Mojo 61, the Model D6 offers an authentic recreation of the original Clavinet’s sound. Unlike sample-based instruments, this engine simulates string sympathetic resonances, the four distinct D6 filters, and the damper lever, providing a deeply expressive playing experience. Additional parameters allow for fine-tuning of string and hammer tip quality, as well as wool damper settings to shape release length, enhancing the instrument's responsiveness to pitch bending and aftertouch.
Beyond faithful sound reproduction, the Model D6 includes built-in effects inspired by classic guitar pedals, such as a Wah-Wah modeled after the JH-1 pedal and a Phaser effect based on the Phase 90. An amplifier simulator with five distinct models and features like amp distortion and pickup feedback add further tonal shaping possibilities. Stereo delay and reverb effects are included to enrich the soundscape. Designed to be efficient with low CPU and RAM usage, the Model D6 is available both as a standalone application and an audio plugin, making it accessible for a wide range of music production setups.
