Kaivo by Madrona Labs merges granular synthesis with physical modeling in a user-friendly patchable interface. This combination enables the creation of rich, evolving sounds by simulating the behavior of real-world vibrating objects using mathematical equations. Unlike traditional sampling, Kaivo’s physical models generate subtle variations with each note, lending a natural and dynamic quality to the sounds.
The plugin features a range of models inspired by materials such as metal, nylon, and gut strings, along with chimes, springs, wooden bodies, membranes, and metal plates. By employing advanced finite difference time domain techniques, Kaivo allows detailed manipulation of internal vibrations, offering nuanced sonic textures like bridge rattles on string models. This level of control brings both lifelike realism and the ability to craft imaginative abstract tones.
Kaivo also excels in generating spatial audio effects, with independent panning options for grains, resonators, and the resonating body. Its granulator uses a multi-channel 2D sound map to feed the physical models, while the vibrating body itself is modeled as a two-dimensional resonator with left and right pickups. This design produces immersive, richly textured soundscapes that respond fluidly to user input.
