HoRNet CompExp is a compressor and expander plugin inspired by a compander chip originally created for telephone line noise reduction. This unique design allows it to dynamically manage audio gain based on a fixed threshold, providing a distinctive approach to controlling signal levels. Its internal threshold is set around -18dBFS, enabling precise gain adjustments depending on whether the input signal is above or below this level.
When used as a compressor, the plugin increases gain when the signal falls below the threshold and reduces gain when it rises above it. In expander mode, these gain behaviors are reversed, allowing the plugin to either suppress noise or enhance dynamic range effectively. This dual functionality originates from its telecommunication roots but offers creative sound-shaping possibilities when applied to music production and audio processing.
The technology behind HoRNet CompExp is also featured in the HoRNet HDD1 delay plugin, where it helps control noise within the delay feedback loop. Its internal gain compensation ensures the output level remains consistent at approximately -18dB RMS, delivering a balanced and controlled sound. This plugin provides a fresh take on gain dynamics, suitable for users seeking a noise reduction tool or a distinctive dynamic processor in their workflow.
