The EQ III plug-in included with Pro Tools is the default equalizer and provides all the essential tools required for both corrective and creative EQ techniques. It features input and output gain controls, seven EQ bands including high-pass and low-pass filters, five bell bands with optional high- and low-shelf modes, and a clean, functional interface suitable for everyday mixing tasks.
EQ III also includes a phase invert button, allowing the polarity of a signal to be flipped without rendering new audio or using an additional plug-in. This is particularly useful when dealing with phase issues caused by multiple microphones capturing the same source at different times, such as the top and bottom microphones on a snare drum. The plug-in’s flexibility makes it suitable for use on a wide range of sources within a session.
Corrective EQ with EQ III involves identifying and reducing unwanted resonant frequencies to improve clarity and create space in a mix, often by sweeping a narrow boosted band to locate problem areas and then cutting them. Creative EQ is more subjective and focuses on enhancing desirable tonal characteristics, such as adding body, brightness, or presence. Overall, EQ III is a reliable and capable equalizer that can be used in professional mixes, making it an excellent tool especially for beginners learning the fundamentals of equalization.
