Echo Cat is an audio plugin that emulates the iconic tape echo effect of the Copicat delay unit from the 1960s, a device renowned for its rich analog delay sound. This plugin captures the authentic character and behavior of the original tape echo, including the distinctive warmth and subtle imperfections that made the Copicat a classic in music production. It offers a visually intuitive interface that mirrors the original hardware, featuring the record and erase heads, three playback heads, and a continuously spinning tape loop, providing a nostalgic yet practical user experience.
Each playback head within Echo Cat can be finely adjusted with controls for time synchronization to the host tempo or manual setting in milliseconds, along with volume, pan, and dedicated low and high pass filters. The plugin also simulates the analog tape characteristics with adjustable parameters such as mono or stereo hiss, tape artifacts including wow and flutter, tape age effects like asperity noise and erasures, and signal loss that mimics high frequency compression. The unique Loop Gap parameter replicates the physical tape loop joint, adding an authentic touch to the delay effect.
Echo Cat further enhances realism through motor controls that introduce hum and variable speed modulation, allowing dynamic changes in tape speed similar to the original Varispeed feature. The wet signal can be managed with ducking to ensure clarity of the dry input, while filters applied outside the feedback loop refine the tone. Users can manipulate mid and side volumes independently and switch between mono, stereo, or a fake stereo mode that delays only the right channel slightly, offering creative spatial possibilities. This plugin delivers a comprehensive tape echo experience ideal for adding vintage warmth and movement to any audio production.
