CabOne is a straightforward speaker cabinet and booth emulator built on an automated computational framework. It uses two distinct acoustic models to generate impulse responses that reflect various cabinet configurations within small room environments. This approach aims to recreate the sound characteristics of a speaker cabinet recorded inside a booth by combining results from detailed acoustic analyses.
The emulator incorporates a near field model that simulates the recording process using a multiphysics method, along with a far field model that calculates how sound travels from the cabinet to a listener in a room. This dual-model design captures both the immediate acoustic behavior around the cabinet and the room’s influence on the sound, providing a realistic tonal representation. The development emphasizes simplicity by initially including only a limited set of speaker cabinet and room parameters.
Designed as a beta release, CabOne offers users a chance to explore the current capabilities of this modeling technology. It functions like traditional cabinet simulators within digital audio workstations, though the far field model’s simplicity can result in a slightly dry sound lacking spatial depth. To counterbalance this, multiple cabinet instances can be layered. The plugin’s output alone is used in test mixes without additional processing, demonstrating its potential to deliver authentic bass and guitar tones.
