The ARP Odyssey is a legendary analog synthesizer originally released by ARP Instruments in 1972. Renowned for its distinctive sound and expressive capabilities, this synth has been a staple in music production for decades. In 2015, Korg reintroduced the ARP Odyssey with the collaboration of ARP cofounder David Friend, ensuring an authentic revival that honors the original instrument's legacy.
Korg's approach to recreating the ARP Odyssey was meticulous, moving beyond typical modeling techniques. Instead of simply simulating the output sound, Korg digitized the actual transistors, capacitors, and resistors from the original hardware. This detailed process allowed them to reconstruct the original circuits, capturing the intricate sound and parameter behaviors that define the ARP Odyssey's character. This method ensures a faithful reproduction of the synth's rich and dynamic tonal qualities.
The software version of the ARP Odyssey includes three distinct filter types reflecting different production periods of the original hardware, along with the classic drive circuitry. New features enhance its functionality, such as the Voice Assign Mode for chord playing, a highly programmable arpeggiator, and an effects unit that offers diverse sound transformations. Users can also switch between the three iconic designs—the white panel of Rev1, the black panel with gold silk-screening of Rev2, and the black panel with orange silk-screening of Rev3—providing both sonic and visual authenticity.
