This remarkable bronze chime-bell set is one of the most complete and well-preserved collections ever discovered, originating from the palace of Marquis Yi of Zeng. Renowned for its unique oval design, each bell produces two distinct tones, expanding beyond the traditional Pentatonic scale and encompassing nearly a full octave range comparable to a modern piano. These chime-bells are recognized as a national treasure of China and offer composers worldwide the chance to incorporate the same majestic sounds once heard in royal courts.

Unearthed in 1978, the Bian Zhong set provides a fascinating glimpse into ancient Chinese musical heritage and state rituals, where music symbolized power and prestige. The set includes 65 bronze bells arranged on a wooden frame, with inscriptions dating the instrument to around 433 BC during the Zhou dynasty.
