The Konghou is a distinctive ancient string instrument originating from Persia over 2000 years ago and introduced to East Asia. Unlike traditional harps, the Konghou features 76 strings arranged in two rows, with each pair linked to a bottom lever. This unique design allows for expressive playing techniques such as vibrato and bends by pressing specific strings while picking. Its soft tonal quality and expansive range from G0 to B5 make it an excellent choice for a variety of musical genres, including film scores, game music, easy listening, new age, and pop.
Ample Sound's Ample China Konghou (ACKH) captures the authentic sound of a Peacock type 76-string Konghou using the advanced Ample Sound 4.0 sampling engine. Performed by Ye Lin, the instrument offers eight articulations including sustain, various tremolos, arpeggios, and pre-vibrato, totaling 7.5 GB of high-quality samples. These were recorded with a sophisticated microphone setup capturing left, right, center, and stereo ambience channels, each with individual EQ settings. Four microphone modes and a collection of Konghou glissando samples enhance the instrument’s realism and flexibility.
The ACKH features a modern interface designed for 5K HD resolution and includes a new Riffer editor with a built-in piano roll for intuitive articulation and expression control without relying on keyswitches. It supports lossless MIDI import and export and offers MIDI tools such as quantize, velocity rounding, and legato functions. The innovative glissando mode automatically generates scale sequences with adjustable speed and intensity based on note input, while the unique SAHDS modulation system and dedicated bend and tremolo systems provide dynamic and expressive control tailored to the Konghou’s characteristics.
